Epicyclic frequency
Builds on Galaxy rotation curveAngular velocity
Definition
Let be an axisymmetric potential with circular speed in the plane , as in the rotation curve. Let be the angular velocity of circular orbits. The epicyclic frequency is defined, where the right-hand side is nonnegative, by
Remarks
Meaning: a planar orbit with angular momentum moves in the effective potential . Its minimum is at the guiding radius , and its second derivative there is . So small radial deviations obey and oscillate with frequency .
Example: for a point mass, , so and . For a flat rotation curve, , so . For a rigid rotation, is constant and .
Non-example: if decreases faster than , then ; circular orbits are then unstable to radial perturbations and no real epicyclic frequency exists. That instability criterion, , is the Rayleigh criterion for rotating flows.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
