Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold with tangent bundle TMTM, and write 00 for the zero section. A Finsler function on MM is a continuous function F ⁣:TM→[0,∞)F \colon TM \to [0, \infty) such that:

  1. FF is smooth on TM∖0TM \setminus 0;
  2. FF is positively homogeneous: F(λv)=λF(v)F(\lambda v) = \lambda F(v) for all v∈TMv \in TM and all λ>0\lambda > 0;
  3. FF is strongly convex: for each p∈Mp \in M and nonzero v∈TpMv \in T_pM, the Hessian at vv of 12F2\tfrac{1}{2} F^2 on TpMT_pM is positive definite.

A Finsler manifold is a pair (M,F)(M, F) of a smooth manifold and a Finsler function on it.

Remarks

Example: if gg is a Riemannian metric on MM, then F(v)=g(v,v)F(v) = \sqrt{g(v, v)} is a Finsler function. It is smooth away from 00, homogeneous of degree 11, and the Hessian of 12F2=12g(v,v)\tfrac{1}{2}F^2 = \tfrac{1}{2} g(v, v) on TpMT_pM is gpg_p itself, which is positive definite.

Non-example: on ℝ2\R^2, F(x,v)=∣v1∣+∣v2∣F(x, v) = \abs{v_1} + \abs{v_2} is positively homogeneous, but it is not smooth along the lines v1=0v_1 = 0 and v2=0v_2 = 0, so clause 1 fails.

Clauses 2 and 3 imply that F(v)>0F(v) > 0 for v≠0v \ne 0 and that FF satisfies the triangle inequality on each tangent space. The function FF need not be symmetric: F(−v)=F(v)F(-v) = F(v) is not required, and Randers metrics are standard examples with F(−v)≠F(v)F(-v) \ne F(v). The length of a piecewise smooth curve γ\gamma is ∫F(γ′(t)) dt\int F(\gamma'(t)) \, dt.
