Definition

Let XX be a set, let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a map, and let x0∈Xx_0 \in X. The fixed-point iteration of ff starting at x0x_0 is the sequence (xn)n≥0(x_n)_{n \ge 0} defined by xn+1=f(xn)for n≥0.x_{n+1} = f(x_n) \quad \text{for } n \ge 0. A fixed point of ff is a point x∗∈Xx^* \in X with f(x∗)=x∗f(x^*) = x^*.

Remarks

If XX is a metric space, ff is continuous, and the iteration converges to x∗x^*, then x∗x^* is a fixed point, since f(x∗)=lim⁡f(xn)=lim⁡xn+1=x∗f(x^*) = \lim f(x_n) = \lim x_{n+1} = x^*. Example: for f(x)=x/2+1/xf(x) = x/2 + 1/x on (0,∞)(0, \infty) and x0=1x_0 = 1, the iterates are 1,1.5,1.416‾,…1, 1.5, 1.41\overline{6}, \ldots, and they converge to 2\sqrt{2}, the fixed point, since x=x/2+1/xx = x/2 + 1/x means x2=2x^2 = 2. Non-example of convergence: for f(x)=2xf(x) = 2x on ℝ\R and x0=1x_0 = 1, the iterates 2n2^n diverge, although 00 is a fixed point. The Banach fixed point theorem says the iteration converges to the unique fixed point when ff is a contraction of a nonempty complete metric space. If q<1q < 1 is the contraction constant, the error after nn steps is at most qnd(x1,x0)/(1−q)q^n d(x_1, x_0) / (1 - q). The sequence is also written xn=fn(x0)x_n = f^n(x_0), the nn-th iterate of ff applied to x0x_0.
