Definition
Let be a regular surface, let , and choose a smooth unit normal field near . Let be the shape operator at and let be the principal curvatures at . The Gaussian curvature of at is It does not depend on the choice of the unit normal.
Remarks
In a local parametrisation, with the coefficients of the first fundamental form and those of the second fundamental form, Example: on the sphere of radius , , so . On a cylinder and , so ; on the saddle at the origin and , so . Non-example: on that saddle, the normal curvatures in the orthogonal directions and are both . Their product is not , because these directions are not principal directions. For the graph of a smooth function, .
