Definition

Let a rigid body occupy a bounded region B⊆ℝ3B \subseteq \R^3 with a continuous mass density ρ ⁣:B→[0,∞)\rho \colon B \to [0, \infty). Fix a point OO and write x=(x1,x2,x3)x = (x_1, x_2, x_3) for the position of a point of BB relative to OO. The inertia tensor of the body about OO is the 3×33 \times 3 matrix IOI_O with entries (IO)jk=∫Bρ(x)(∣x∣2δjk−xjxk) dV,j,k=1,2,3,(I_O)_{jk} = \int_B \rho(x) \big( \abs{x}^2 \delta_{jk} - x_j x_k \big) \, dV, \qquad j, k = 1, 2, 3, where δjk\delta_{jk} is 11 if j=kj = k and 00 otherwise. The matrix IOI_O is symmetric. A principal axis of the body at OO is a line through OO spanned by an eigenvector of IOI_O. The corresponding eigenvalues are the principal moments of inertia at OO.

Remarks

By the spectral theorem, there is an orthonormal basis of ℝ3\R^3 made of eigenvectors of IOI_O, so every body has three mutually perpendicular principal axes at each point. For a unit vector nn, the number nTIOnn^T I_O n is the moment of inertia of the body about the line through OO in the direction nn. For a body turning about the fixed point OO with angular velocity ω\omega, the angular momentum about OO is IOωI_O \omega and the kinetic energy is 12ωTIOω\tfrac12 \omega^T I_O \omega. The matrix IOI_O is positive semidefinite, and it is positive definite unless all the mass lies on one line through OO. For point masses mim_i at positions x(i)x^{(i)}, the integral is replaced by the sum ∑imi(∣x(i)∣2δjk−xj(i)xk(i))\sum_i m_i \big(\abs{x^{(i)}}^2 \delta_{jk} - x^{(i)}_j x^{(i)}_k\big).

Example: a uniform box of mass MM and side lengths a,b,ca, b, c, centred at OO with edges along the coordinate axes. The products xjxkx_j x_k with j≠kj \ne k integrate to 00 by symmetry, and ∫Bρ x12 dV=Ma2/12\int_B \rho\, x_1^2 \, dV = M a^2 / 12. So IO=diag⁡(M(b2+c2)/12, M(a2+c2)/12, M(a2+b2)/12)I_O = \operatorname{diag}\big(M(b^2 + c^2)/12, \ M(a^2 + c^2)/12, \ M(a^2 + b^2)/12\big), and the coordinate axes are principal axes.

Non-example: for two point masses mm at (1,1,0)(1, 1, 0) and (−1,−1,0)(-1, -1, 0), the off-diagonal entry is (IO)12=−2m≠0(I_O)_{12} = -2m \ne 0. So the x1x_1-axis is not a principal axis; the principal axes are the lines spanned by (1,1,0)(1, 1, 0), (1,−1,0)(1, -1, 0) and (0,0,1)(0, 0, 1).
