Statement

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or β„‚\C, let IβŠ†β„I \subseteq \R be an open interval, and let A ⁣:I→𝕂nΓ—nA \colon I \to \mathbb{K}^{n \times n} be a differentiable map. Then t↦det⁑A(t)t \mapsto \det A(t) is differentiable, and for all t∈It \in I ddtdet⁑A(t)=tr⁑(adj⁑(A(t)) Aβ€²(t)),\frac{d}{dt} \det A(t) = \tr\big(\operatorname{adj}(A(t))\, A'(t)\big), where det⁑\det is the determinant, adj⁑\operatorname{adj} is the adjugate and tr⁑\tr is the trace. If A(t)A(t) is invertible, this equals det⁑A(t)β‹…tr⁑(A(t)βˆ’1Aβ€²(t))\det A(t) \cdot \tr\big(A(t)^{-1} A'(t)\big).

Remarks

The determinant is a polynomial in the entries aija_{ij}. By the Laplace expansion along row ii, its partial derivative with respect to aija_{ij} is the cofactor CijC_{ij}. The chain rule gives ddtdet⁑A=βˆ‘i,jCij aijβ€²\frac{d}{dt}\det A = \sum_{i,j} C_{ij}\, a_{ij}'. This sum is tr⁑(adj⁑(A)Aβ€²)\tr(\operatorname{adj}(A) A'), because adj⁑(A)ji=Cij\operatorname{adj}(A)_{ji} = C_{ij}. The second form follows from adj⁑(A)=det⁑(A)Aβˆ’1\operatorname{adj}(A) = \det(A) A^{-1}.

A special case is ddtdet⁑(I+tX)∣t=0=tr⁑X\frac{d}{dt}\det(I + tX)\big|_{t=0} = \tr X: the derivative of the determinant at the identity is the trace. For A(t)=etXA(t) = e^{tX}, the formula gives ddtdet⁑etX=tr⁑(X)det⁑etX\frac{d}{dt}\det e^{tX} = \tr(X) \det e^{tX}, so det⁑etX=ettr⁑X\det e^{tX} = e^{t \tr X}.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula says that the differential of det⁑\det at AA is the linear map X↦tr⁑(adj⁑(A)X)X \mapsto \tr(\operatorname{adj}(A) X). It gives Liouville's formula for the Wronskian of a linear system of differential equations. It also gives the determinant of a matrix exponential, det⁑eA=etr⁑A\det e^A = e^{\tr A}. In Lie theory it says that the derivative of det⁑ ⁣:GLn(𝕂)→𝕂×\det \colon \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{K}) \to \mathbb{K}^\times at the identity is the trace.
