Summary
Kinematics is the part of classical mechanics that describes motion without asking what causes it. It studies positions as functions of time and their derivatives, such as velocity, acceleration and angular velocity. It also describes how these quantities change between frames of reference and how the parts of linkages and mechanisms move together. Dynamics then adds masses and forces, and uses the kinematic description to state the laws of motion.
