Statement
Let be a stochastic process with values in . Assume that there are constants , and such that Then has a continuous modification: there is a process such that for every and every path is continuous. Moreover, for every , the paths of are locally Hölder continuous of order .
Remarks
Idea of the proof. On the dyadic times , Markov's inequality and the hypothesis give . Summing over the times in and over gives a convergent series when . By the Borel–Cantelli lemma, the increments on dyadic times are eventually small, so is uniformly Hölder continuous on the dyadic times, and one defines as its continuous extension.
Example: for a Wiener process and an integer , is normal with variance , so for a constant . The theorem applies with and , and gives Hölder continuity of every order . Letting , Brownian paths are locally Hölder continuous of every order .
The exponent must exceed . For a Poisson process , , so the bound holds with and exponent , but the paths of have jumps and has no continuous modification.
For processes indexed by , the same conclusion holds with in place of .

For a student
The theorem bridges the finite-dimensional distributions of a process, which say nothing about path properties, and the regularity of its paths. It is used to construct Brownian motion and the Brownian sheet, to prove continuity of solutions of stochastic differential equations in their initial data, and to obtain Hölder exponents. Its proof is a chaining argument, a technique that also yields the Kolmogorov–Chentsov tightness criteria in spaces of continuous functions.
