Definition
An entire function belongs to the Laguerre–Pólya class if there is a sequence of polynomials such that:
The class is written .
Remarks
A function that is not identically zero belongs to the class if and only if Here with , , and is an integer. The are nonzero real numbers with , and the product is a Weierstrass product. Example: is the limit of the polynomials , which have real coefficients and only the real roots . Example: is in the class. Non-example: has real coefficients but the roots . It is not a limit of real-rooted real polynomials, because by Hurwitz's theorem such limits, when not identically zero, have only real zeros. Non-example: has no zeros, but its product form would need . The class is closed under differentiation.
