Martin's axiom

Builds on Partial orderCardinal numberCardinality of the continuum

Definition

Let (P,≤)(P, \le) be a partially ordered set, and read q≤pq \le p as "qq extends pp". Two elements p,qp, q are compatible if some r∈Pr \in P has r≤pr \le p and r≤qr \le q.

  1. An antichain of PP is a subset whose elements are pairwise incompatible, and PP has the countable chain condition, ccc, if each antichain is countable.
  2. A set D⊆PD \subseteq P is dense if for each p∈Pp \in P there is q∈Dq \in D with q≤pq \le p.
  3. A filter on PP is a nonempty G⊆PG \subseteq P that is upward closed and in which any two elements have a common extension in GG.

Let κ\kappa be a cardinal. The statement MAκ\mathrm{MA}_\kappa concerns each ccc partial order PP and each family 𝒟\mathcal{D} of at most κ\kappa dense subsets of PP. It says that some filter on PP meets every member of 𝒟\mathcal{D}. Martin's axiom, MA, is the statement that MAκ\mathrm{MA}_\kappa holds for every κ<2ℵ0\kappa < 2^{\aleph_0}, the cardinality of the continuum.

Remarks

Example: MAℵ0\mathrm{MA}_{\aleph_0} is provable in ZFC. Check: list the dense sets as D0,D1,…D_0, D_1, \ldots, choose p0≥p1≥⋯p_0 \ge p_1 \ge \cdots with pn∈Dnp_n \in D_n, and take the elements above some pnp_n. So the continuum hypothesis implies MA. Non-example: MA2ℵ0\mathrm{MA}_{2^{\aleph_0}} is false. Take the ccc order of finite partial functions from ω\omega to 22, ordered by reverse inclusion. Consider the dense sets "nn is in the domain" and "the function differs from xx", for all nn and all x∈2ωx \in 2^\omega. A filter that meets them all would give a total function different from every xx. Solovay and Tennenbaum showed that MA together with 2ℵ0>ℵ12^{\aleph_0} > \aleph_1 is consistent, if ZFC is consistent. MA with 2ℵ0>ℵ12^{\aleph_0} > \aleph_1 implies Suslin's hypothesis, and MA implies 2κ=2ℵ02^\kappa = 2^{\aleph_0} for each infinite κ<2ℵ0\kappa < 2^{\aleph_0}.
