Statement

Let FF be a field of characteristic different from 22, and let n≥0n \ge 0. Then the Galois symbol KnM(F)/2⟶Hn(F,ℤ/2ℤ),{a1,…,an}↦δ(a1)∪⋯∪δ(an),K_n^M(F)/2 \longrightarrow H^n(F, \Z/2\Z), \qquad \set{a_1, \ldots, a_n} \mapsto \delta(a_1) \cup \cdots \cup \delta(a_n), from Milnor K-theory modulo 22 to Galois cohomology with coefficients in ℤ/2ℤ=μ2⊗n\Z/2\Z = \mu_2^{\otimes n}, is an isomorphism. Here δ ⁣:F×→H1(F,ℤ/2ℤ)\delta \colon F^\times \to H^1(F, \Z/2\Z) is the Kummer map.

Remarks

Milnor stated this in 1970, and Voevodsky proved it using motivic cohomology and motivic Steenrod operations. Before that, the case n≤1n \le 1 followed from Kummer theory, the case n=2n = 2 was proved by Merkurjev, and the case n=3n = 3 by Merkurjev–Suslin and, independently, by Rost. It is the case ℓ=2\ell = 2 of the norm residue isomorphism theorem.

Example: F=ℝF = \R. Since ℝ×/(ℝ×)2={±1}\R^\times / (\R^\times)^2 = \set{\pm 1}, the group KnM(ℝ)/2K_n^M(\R)/2 is generated by {−1,…,−1}\set{-1, \ldots, -1}. The cohomology ring H∗(ℝ,ℤ/2ℤ)H^*(\R, \Z/2\Z) is 𝔽2[x]\F_2[x] with x=δ(−1)x = \delta(-1), so the symbol maps to xn≠0x^n \ne 0, and both sides are ℤ/2ℤ\Z/2\Z.

The hypothesis on the characteristic is needed for the Kummer map. In characteristic 22, squaring is not a surjective map of (Fs)×(F^s)^\times with kernel μ2\mu_2, and the Galois symbol is not defined in this form.

Going deeper

For a student

Combined with the work of Orlov, Vishik and Voevodsky, it also gives the Milnor conjecture on quadratic forms. That result says that the graded ring of the Witt ring of FF for its fundamental ideal is isomorphic to K∗M(F)/2K_*^M(F)/2. So quadratic forms over FF are classified, up to a filtration, by Galois cohomology invariants.
