Definition
Let be the circular speed of a disc galaxy at radius , as in the rotation curve. Let be the angular velocity, and let be the radius of the observer. The Oort constants are
Remarks
They satisfy and . The epicyclic frequency at is .
Take a star on a circular orbit in the plane, at distance and galactic longitude . To first order in , its velocity relative to the local circular motion has radial part and transverse part . This is how and are measured. Measured values in the solar neighbourhood are roughly and km/s/kpc.
Example: for a flat rotation curve , so . Non-example: a rigid rotation has , so and ; there is no shear, and the radial velocities of nearby stars show no pattern.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
