Builds on Strongly measurable functionDual spaceSeparable spaceMeasurable function
Statement
Let be a measurable space and let be a Banach space over or with dual space . Let be a function. Then is strongly measurable if and only if both of the following hold.
- The function is measurable for every continuous linear functional , that is, is weakly measurable.
- The image is a separable subset of .
Remarks
The direct implication is easy: pointwise, and lies in the closure of the countably many values of the approximating simple functions . For the converse, one may replace by the closed linear span of , which is separable. In a separable Banach space there is a sequence in with for all . So is measurable for each , and one builds simple approximations by sending to the nearest point of a countable dense set among its first points.
When is separable, condition 2 is automatic, so weak and strong measurability coincide. Without condition 2 the equivalence fails. Take with the Borel σ-algebra and the map into the non-separable Hilbert space . It is weakly measurable, since vanishes outside a countable set for each . But is not separable, so is not strongly measurable.
There is also a version relative to a measure . Then is strongly -measurable if and only if it is weakly -measurable and takes values in a separable subset of outside a -null set.

For a student
The theorem is the main tool to check the hypotheses of the Bochner integral. With Bochner's criterion, it shows when is Bochner integrable. This holds as soon as is weakly measurable, essentially separably valued and . For a separable space , weak measurability alone suffices. The theorem also explains why the Pettis integral, which only asks for weak measurability, covers more functions than the Bochner integral in non-separable spaces.
