Proof

We use the action of GG on itself by left multiplication. Let ee be the identity of GG, and for g∈Gg \in G let ℓg ⁣:G→G\ell_g \colon G \to G, ℓg(x)=gx\ell_g(x) = g x.

  1. For g,h,x∈Gg, h, x \in G, associativity gives ℓg(ℓh(x))=g(hx)=(gh)x=ℓgh(x)\ell_g(\ell_h(x)) = g(hx) = (gh)x = \ell_{gh}(x). So ℓg∘ℓh=ℓgh\ell_g \circ \ell_h = \ell_{gh}.
  2. Also ℓe(x)=ex=x\ell_e(x) = ex = x, so ℓe\ell_e is the identity map of GG.
  3. By steps 1 and 2, ℓg∘ℓg−1=ℓe\ell_g \circ \ell_{g^{-1}} = \ell_e and ℓg−1∘ℓg=ℓe\ell_{g^{-1}} \circ \ell_g = \ell_e. So ℓg\ell_g is a bijection with inverse ℓg−1\ell_{g^{-1}}, and ℓg∈Sym⁡(G)\ell_g \in \operatorname{Sym}(G), the symmetric group of GG.
  4. Let φ ⁣:G→Sym⁡(G)\varphi \colon G \to \operatorname{Sym}(G), φ(g)=ℓg\varphi(g) = \ell_g. The operation of Sym⁡(G)\operatorname{Sym}(G) is composition, so step 1 says φ(gh)=φ(g)∘φ(h)\varphi(gh) = \varphi(g) \circ \varphi(h). Thus φ\varphi is a group homomorphism.
  5. If φ(g)=φ(h)\varphi(g) = \varphi(h), then g=ℓg(e)=ℓh(e)=hg = \ell_g(e) = \ell_h(e) = h. So φ\varphi is injective.
  6. Let K={ℓg:g∈G}K = \set{\ell_g : g \in G} be the image of φ\varphi. By steps 1 to 3, KK contains the identity ℓe\ell_e, is closed under composition, and contains the inverse ℓg−1\ell_{g^{-1}} of each ℓg\ell_g. So KK is a subgroup of Sym⁡(G)\operatorname{Sym}(G).
  7. As a map G→KG \to K, φ\varphi is a homomorphism, injective by step 5 and onto by the definition of KK. So it is an isomorphism, and GG is isomorphic to the subgroup KK of Sym⁡(G)\operatorname{Sym}(G).

Idea

Each element gg shuffles the elements of the group by x↦gxx \mapsto g x. Composing two shuffles corresponds to multiplying the elements, and different elements give different shuffles because they send ee to different places. So the group sits faithfully inside the permutations of its own elements.
