Proof
We give a map with a two-sided inverse.
- Let be a set, and let be the set of functions from to .
- Define on the power set by , the indicator function of . So if , and if .
- Define by .
- Let . Then . So is the identity of .
- Let and put . For , exactly when , that is, when .
- Both functions take only the values and . So step 5 gives for all , and .
- By steps 4 and 6, has a two-sided inverse, so is a bijection, since a map with a two-sided inverse is bijective. Thus and are equinumerous.
- The cardinal is by definition the cardinality of . So step 7 gives .
Idea
A subset of is the same information as a yes-or-no answer for each element of . The indicator function records these answers, and reading off the "yes" answers gives the subset back.
