Mathematical logic and foundations Proof
Proof that a function is bijective iff it has a two-sided inverse
Builds on Bijective functionInjective functionSurjective functionFunctionFunction compositionIdentity function
Proof
We prove the two directions separately, and we use no choice.
- Let be a function. Here is composition and is the identity function.
- First suppose is bijective, that is, injective and surjective.
- Let . Since is surjective, some has . If also , then , so by injectivity. So exactly one has .
- Define by letting be the unique of step 3. Then is a function, and for each . So .
- Let . By step 4, . Since is injective, . So .
- Now suppose that satisfies and .
- Let with . Applying gives . Since , this says . So is injective.
- Let and put . Since , we get . So is surjective.
- By steps 7 and 8, is bijective.
- By steps 4, 5 and 9, is bijective if and only if there is a function with and .
Idea
For a bijection, each has exactly one preimage, and sending to it undoes on both sides. Conversely, forces to be injective, and forces to be surjective.
