Bi-elliptic transfer
Builds on Hohmann transfer orbitVis-viva equationKepler orbit
Example
Let , let be the radii of two coplanar circular orbits about the same centre, and choose . The bi-elliptic transfer uses two half-ellipses, both Kepler orbits. A first tangential burn at puts the craft on an ellipse with periapsis and apoapsis , of semi-major axis . At a second burn raises the periapsis to , giving an ellipse of semi-major axis . At a third, braking, burn puts the craft on the outer circle. By the vis-viva equation the three changes of speed are
Check with numbers: take , , and let . Then , and , a total of about . The Hohmann transfer between the same circles needs . So here the bi-elliptic transfer is cheaper.
Remarks
If approximately, the Hohmann transfer is cheaper for every choice of . If approximately, the bi-elliptic transfer is cheaper for every . In between, it depends on . The saving is small and the bi-elliptic transfer takes much longer.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
