Mechanics of particles and systems Definition
Momentum
Builds on Classical mechanicsVelocity
Definition
Let a particle of mass move with velocity at time . Its momentum at time is the vector For a Newtonian system of point particles with masses and velocities , the total momentum is .
Remarks
Example: a particle of mass with position has velocity and momentum . Non-example: the quantity is a scalar, the kinetic energy, and not the momentum. With and the centre of mass , the total momentum is . Some texts call the linear momentum, to separate it from angular momentum. Newton's second law reads , where is the net force.
