Galaxy rotation curve

Definition

Let Φ(R,z)\Phi(R, z) be an axisymmetric gravitational potential, written in cylindrical coordinates (R,φ,z)(R, \varphi, z), with symmetry plane z=0z = 0 and ∂Φ/∂R(R,0)≥0\partial \Phi / \partial R (R, 0) \ge 0 for R>0R > 0. The circular speed at radius R>0R > 0 is vc(R)=R ∂Φ∂R(R,0),v_c(R) = \sqrt{R \, \frac{\partial \Phi}{\partial R}(R, 0)}, the speed of a circular orbit of radius RR in the plane z=0z = 0. The rotation curve is the function R↦vc(R)R \mapsto v_c(R), or its graph. The angular velocity of the circular orbit is Ω(R)=vc(R)/R\Omega(R) = v_c(R)/R.

Remarks

Check of the formula: on a circular orbit the centripetal acceleration vc2/Rv_c^2 / R equals the inward radial force per unit mass ∂Φ/∂R\partial \Phi / \partial R. The potential is linked to the mass density by Poisson's equation ∇2Φ=4πGρ\nabla^2 \Phi = 4 \pi G \rho.

Example: for a spherical mass distribution with mass M(r)M(r) inside radius rr, Newton's law of gravitation gives ∂Φ/∂r=GM(r)/r2\partial \Phi / \partial r = G M(r)/r^2, so vc(r)2=GM(r)/rv_c(r)^2 = G M(r)/r. For a point mass MM this gives the Keplerian curve vc=GM/rv_c = \sqrt{GM/r}. For a density ρ(r)=v02/(4πGr2)\rho(r) = v_0^2 / (4 \pi G r^2) one gets M(r)=v02r/GM(r) = v_0^2 r / G and the flat curve vc=v0v_c = v_0.

Non-example: in a potential with ∂Φ/∂R<0\partial \Phi / \partial R < 0 at some radius the net force there points outward, so no circular orbit exists and vcv_c is not defined at that radius.

In practice the rotation curve is measured from Doppler shifts of the gas, often the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen.
