Mechanics of particles and systems Definition
Angular momentum
Builds on MomentumCross product
Definition
Let a particle of mass have position and momentum at time , and let be a fixed point. The angular momentum of the particle about at time is where is the cross product of . For particles with positions and momenta , the total angular momentum about is .
Remarks
Example: let with and . Then and , a constant vector along the axis of rotation. Non-example: a particle moving on a line through , say , has ; it has momentum but no angular momentum about . When no point is named, is the origin. The angular momentum depends on the choice of ; for the total angular momentum, moving to adds , where is the total momentum.
