Bullen parameter

Builds on Adams–Williamson equationBulk modulus

Definition

Let a spherically symmetric planet in hydrostatic equilibrium have density ρ(r)>0\rho(r) > 0 and gravity g(r)>0g(r) > 0 at radius rr. Let α\alpha and β\beta be its P- and S-speeds, with seismic parameter Φ=α2−43β2>0\Phi = \alpha^2 - \frac43\beta^2 > 0. The Bullen parameter at radius rr is η(r)=−Φ(r)ρ(r) g(r)dρdr(r).\eta(r) = -\frac{\Phi(r)}{\rho(r)\, g(r)} \frac{d\rho}{dr}(r).

Remarks

By the Adams–Williamson equation, η=1\eta = 1 in any shell of uniform composition and adiabatic temperature. With K=ρΦK = \rho\Phi, the bulk modulus along the profile, and dP/dr=−ρgdP/dr = -\rho g, one finds the equivalent form η=dK/dP+g−1dΦ/dr\eta = dK/dP + g^{-1} d\Phi/dr. The check: dK/dP=(Φ dρ/dr+ρ dΦ/dr)/(−ρg)=η−g−1dΦ/drdK/dP = (\Phi\, d\rho/dr + \rho\, d\Phi/dr)/(-\rho g) = \eta - g^{-1} d\Phi/dr. Example: if ρ\rho satisfies the Adams–Williamson equation, then dρ/dr=−ρg/Φd\rho/dr = -\rho g/\Phi, and the formula gives η=1\eta = 1. Non-example: a shell in which density does not change with depth while ρ\rho, gg, Φ\Phi are positive has η=0≠1\eta = 0 \ne 1; it cannot be adiabatic and uniform. A superadiabatic temperature gradient gives η<1\eta < 1, and a gradual change of composition or phase toward denser material with depth gives η>1\eta > 1.
