Free-fall time
Builds on Newton's law of universal gravitation
Definition
Consider a ball of uniform density made of pressureless matter, initially at rest, that contracts under its own Newtonian gravity, with gravitational constant . The free-fall time is the time after which every shell of the ball reaches the centre:
Remarks
Check: a shell starting at radius feels the attraction of the mass inside it, which stays constant because shells do not cross. By Newton's law of gravitation the shell moves on a degenerate Kepler orbit with semi-major axis , and it reaches the centre after half a period, , independent of . Example: for kg per cubic metre, close to the mean density of the Sun, and in SI units, the formula gives about seconds. Non-example: a star in hydrostatic equilibrium has pressure, so it does not collapse in the time or at all. Still, is used as its dynamical time scale.
