Definition
Let be a real number and let be a constant. Consider a spherically symmetric, self-gravitating ball of fluid in hydrostatic equilibrium, with pressure and density . It is a polytrope of index if at every point. The number is the polytropic index and is the polytropic exponent.
Remarks
Write with the central density, and with , where is the gravitational constant. Then hydrostatic equilibrium becomes the Lane–Emden equation with and , and the surface is the first zero of . Example: for the solution is , so and the radius does not depend on the central density. Example: gives a ball of uniform density, since is constant. Non-example: an isothermal ideal gas, with proportional to , is the limit and is not a polytrope of finite index; it leads instead to the Emden–Chandrasekhar equation. A polytrope has finite radius when ; for the radius is infinite but the mass is finite.
