Einstein ring

Builds on Gravitational deflection of light

Example

Let a point mass MM, the lens, lie at distance DLD_L from an observer. Let a point source lie at distance DS>DLD_S > D_L exactly behind it on the same line. Let DLS=DS−DLD_{LS} = D_S - D_L be the distance from lens to source, and work with small angles. By symmetry, the image of the source is a circle around the lens, the Einstein ring, of angular radius θE=4GMc2 DLSDLDS.\theta_E = \sqrt{\frac{4 G M}{c^2} \, \frac{D_{LS}}{D_L D_S}}. Check: a ray seen at angle θ\theta from the lens passes it at impact parameter b=DLθb = D_L \theta. By the gravitational deflection of light, it is bent by the angle α=4GM/(c2b)\alpha = 4GM/(c^2 b). For the ray to reach the source, which sits at angle 00, the geometry of small angles requires θDS=αDLS\theta D_S = \alpha D_{LS}. So θDS=4GMDLS/(c2DLθ)\theta D_S = 4GM D_{LS}/(c^2 D_L \theta), which gives θ2=θE2\theta^2 = \theta_E^2.

Remarks

If the source is at a small angle β≠0\beta \ne 0 from the lens, the same geometry gives the lens equation β=θ−θE2/θ\beta = \theta - \theta_E^2/\theta, which has two solutions: the ring breaks into two images. For cosmological distances, DLD_L, DSD_S and DLSD_{LS} must be taken as angular diameter distances, and then DLS≠DS−DLD_{LS} \ne D_S - D_L in general.
