Chandrasekhar's white dwarf equation

Builds on Ordinary differential equationHydrostatic equilibriumLane–Emden equation

Definition

Let CC be a real number with 0<C<10 < C < 1. Let φ\varphi be a real function of η>0\eta > 0. Chandrasekhar's white dwarf equation with parameter CC is the ordinary differential equation 1η2ddη(η2dφdη)+(φ2−C)3/2=0,\frac{1}{\eta^2} \frac{d}{d\eta} \left( \eta^2 \frac{d\varphi}{d\eta} \right) + \left( \varphi^2 - C \right)^{3/2} = 0, with the initial conditions φ(0)=1\varphi(0) = 1 and φ′(0)=0\varphi'(0) = 0. It is considered on the interval where φ2≥C\varphi^2 \ge C, and the surface of the star is the first point η1\eta_1 where φ(η1)=C\varphi(\eta_1) = \sqrt{C}.

Remarks

It expresses hydrostatic equilibrium for a spherical ball of cold, fully degenerate electron gas. Let xx be the Fermi momentum of the electrons in units of mecm_e c, with mem_e the electron mass and cc the speed of light. Let x0x_0 be the central value of xx. Then φ=1+x2/1+x02\varphi = \sqrt{1 + x^2} / \sqrt{1 + x_0^2} and C=1/(1+x02)C = 1/(1 + x_0^2). So CC near 11 means a low central density and CC near 00 a very high one. Example: take C=1/2C = 1/2. The central value φ(0)=1\varphi(0) = 1 satisfies φ2≥C\varphi^2 \ge C, and the solution decreases from 11 until it reaches 1/2\sqrt{1/2} at a finite radius η1\eta_1. It describes a white dwarf whose central electrons have Fermi momentum x0=1x_0 = 1. Limit case: for C=0C = 0 the equation becomes η−2(η2φ′)′+φ3=0\eta^{-2} (\eta^2 \varphi')' + \varphi^3 = 0, the Lane–Emden equation of index 33, which governs the mass limit. Non-example: the constant φ=1\varphi = 1 is not a solution, since the left side equals (1−C)3/2>0(1 - C)^{3/2} > 0. For CC close to 11, writing φ2−C=(1−C)θ\varphi^2 - C = (1 - C) \theta and rescaling η\eta turns the equation, to leading order in 1−C1 - C, into the Lane–Emden equation of index 3/23/2.
