Definition
Let be a regular curve of class on an interval . Let be its unit tangent rotated by a right angle counterclockwise, and let be its signed curvature. Assume that for all . The evolute of is the curve So is the centre of the osculating circle of at .
Remarks
Example: for , one has and . Then , so the evolute is the semicubical parabola . Non-example: for on , the curvature vanishes at , so the evolute is not defined on the whole interval; near the centres of curvature go off to infinity. The evolute of a circle of radius is the constant curve at its centre. If is of class , then is parallel to , and exactly where , that is, at the vertices of .
