Proof that a zero derivative on a connected open set implies constant
Builds on Mean value inequalityDifferentiable function of several variablesConnected setConnected spaceOpen setOpen ball
Proof
We show that is constant near each point, and then use connectedness.
- Let and be as in the statement. If is empty, there is nothing to prove. So fix , and put .
- Let . Since is open, there is such that the open ball lies in .
- Let and . Then . So the segment from to lies in .
- On this segment , so there. The map is differentiable on . By the mean value inequality with , . So .
- Thus is constant on the ball , for each and its from step 2.
- Put and . Then , , and .
- The set is open. If , then by step 5 each has . So .
- The set is open. If , then by step 5 each has . So .
- The sets and are open in and lie in , so they are open in with the subspace topology.
- The set is connected, so is not the union of two disjoint nonempty open subsets. This is the definition of a connected space. Since by step 6, steps 6 to 9 force .
- So , that is, for each . Hence is constant on .
Idea
A zero derivative makes constant on each small ball, by the mean value inequality. So the set where takes the value and the set where it does not are both open. A connected set cannot be split into two disjoint nonempty open pieces, so the second set is empty.
