General topology Proof

Proof that compactness of a subset can be tested with open sets of the ambient space

Proof

We translate covers in each direction with the definition of the subspace topology.

  1. Let XX be a topological space and let K⊆XK \subseteq X. Give KK the subspace topology, whose open sets are the sets K∩UK \cap U with UU open in XX.
  2. By definition, KK is compact when KK with this topology is a compact space. That is, each open cover of KK by open sets of KK has a finite subcover.
  3. Assume KK is compact. Let (Ui)i∈I(U_i)_{i \in I} be open sets of XX with K⊆⋃i∈IUiK \subseteq \bigcup_{i \in I} U_i.
  4. For each ii, the set Vi=K∩UiV_i = K \cap U_i is open in KK. Each x∈Kx \in K lies in some UiU_i, hence in ViV_i. So (Vi)i∈I(V_i)_{i \in I} is an open cover of the space KK.
  5. By compactness, there are i1,…,in∈Ii_1, \ldots, i_n \in I with K=Vi1∪⋯∪VinK = V_{i_1} \cup \cdots \cup V_{i_n}.
  6. Since Vij⊆UijV_{i_j} \subseteq U_{i_j}, we get K⊆Ui1∪⋯∪UinK \subseteq U_{i_1} \cup \cdots \cup U_{i_n}. This proves the first implication.
  7. Now assume the cover condition for open sets of XX. Let (Vi)i∈I(V_i)_{i \in I} be an open cover of the space KK by open sets of KK.
  8. For each ii, choose an open set UiU_i of XX with Vi=K∩UiV_i = K \cap U_i. This is possible by step 1.
  9. Then K=⋃iVi⊆⋃iUiK = \bigcup_i V_i \subseteq \bigcup_i U_i. By the assumption, there are i1,…,in∈Ii_1, \ldots, i_n \in I with K⊆Ui1∪⋯∪UinK \subseteq U_{i_1} \cup \cdots \cup U_{i_n}.
  10. Let x∈Kx \in K. Then x∈Uijx \in U_{i_j} for some jj, and x∈Kx \in K, so x∈K∩Uij=Vijx \in K \cap U_{i_j} = V_{i_j}.
  11. So Vi1,…,VinV_{i_1}, \ldots, V_{i_n} is a finite subcover of (Vi)i∈I(V_i)_{i \in I}. Thus KK is a compact space, and KK is compact.

Idea

An open set of the subspace KK is just an open set of XX cut down to KK. So a cover of KK by open sets of XX and a cover by open sets of KK carry the same information, and finite subcovers match up.
