Statement
For each , let be real numbers and let be the closed interval. Assume that for all . Then the intersection is not empty. If moreover , then the intersection consists of exactly one point.
Remarks
The left endpoints increase and are bounded above by . By the completeness axiom, they have a supremum . Each is an upper bound of all , so for all and , and lies in every . If two points lie in every , then for all , so the lengths cannot tend to .
Each hypothesis is needed. The open intervals are nested and nonempty, but no real number lies in all of them. The closed unbounded sets are nested, but their intersection is empty. Over , the intervals with the decimal approximations of from below and above have empty intersection.
The theorem is the case of Cantor's intersection theorem.
Going deeper
For a student
The theorem is one form of the completeness of the real numbers, and in an Archimedean ordered field it is equivalent to the least-upper-bound property. It drives bisection proofs: halve an interval, keep a half with a desired property, and repeat. This is how one proves the Bolzano–Weierstrass theorem and the intermediate value theorem, and how Cantor showed that is uncountable.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
