Definition
Let be a complex manifold, and let be the integrable almost complex structure given by multiplication by in holomorphic charts. A Hermitian metric on is a Riemannian metric on such that for all tangent vectors at the same point. A Hermitian manifold is a complex manifold with a Hermitian metric.
The fundamental form of is the differential -form . The metric is Kähler if , where is the exterior derivative, and then is a Kähler manifold.
Remarks
Example: with the Euclidean metric and the multiplication by . Multiplication by is an orthogonal map of , so . Its fundamental form is , which has constant coefficients, so and is Kähler.
Non-example: on the metric is Riemannian but not Hermitian. Here , so .
The form is a Hermitian form on each tangent space viewed as a complex vector space. Every complex manifold has Hermitian metrics: given any Riemannian metric , the metric is Hermitian. The same definition with an almost complex structure that need not be integrable gives almost Hermitian manifolds; by the Newlander–Nirenberg theorem the integrable case is the complex case. Every complex submanifold of a Kähler manifold is Kähler with the induced metric.
