Builds on Electric fieldElectric chargeFlux through a surfaceDivergenceDivergence theorem

Statement

Let ε0>0\varepsilon_0 > 0 be the vacuum permittivity. Let ρ ⁣:ℝ3→ℝ\rho \colon \R^3 \to \R be a bounded, measurable charge density with compact support, and let EE be its electric field. Let Ω⊂ℝ3\Omega \subset \R^3 be a bounded open set with C1C^1 boundary ∂Ω\partial \Omega and outward unit normal nn. Then the flux of EE through ∂Ω\partial \Omega is ∫∂ΩE⋅n dA=1ε0∫Ωρ(y) dy.\int_{\partial \Omega} E \cdot n \, dA = \frac{1}{\varepsilon_0} \int_\Omega \rho(y) \, dy. If moreover ρ\rho is continuously differentiable, then EE is continuously differentiable and its divergence is ∇⋅E=ρ/ε0\nabla \cdot E = \rho / \varepsilon_0 on ℝ3\R^3.

Remarks

The proof reduces to one point charge by superposition and Fubini's theorem. For a charge qq at yy, the field q(x−y)/(4πε0∣x−y∣3)q (x - y) / (4 \pi \varepsilon_0 \abs{x - y}^3) has divergence zero away from yy. By the divergence theorem, its flux through ∂Ω\partial \Omega equals its flux through a small sphere around yy if y∈Ωy \in \Omega, which is q/ε0q / \varepsilon_0, and it is 00 if y∉Ω‾y \notin \overline{\Omega}. For point charges, the same holds when no charge lies on ∂Ω\partial \Omega: the flux is the sum of the charges inside Ω\Omega divided by ε0\varepsilon_0. Example: a ball of radius RR with uniform total charge QQ has, at distance r>Rr > R from its centre, a radial field of size Q/(4πε0r2)Q / (4 \pi \varepsilon_0 r^2), by symmetry and the integral form.

Going deeper

For a student

Gauss's law is the integral form of the equation ∇⋅E=ρ/ε0\nabla \cdot E = \rho / \varepsilon_0, which is the first of Maxwell's equations. It is equivalent to Coulomb's law for static fields, once one also knows that the field is curl-free. With symmetry, it gives the field of spheres, cylinders and planes without any integration. Combined with E=−∇φE = -\nabla \varphi, it yields Poisson's equation for the electric potential.
