Proof

  1. Let ff and gg be holomorphic on an open set WW that contains {z:∣z−c∣≤r}\set{z : \abs{z - c} \le r}. Let CC be the circle ∣z−c∣=r\abs{z - c} = r, and assume ∣g∣<∣f∣\abs{g} < \abs{f} on CC.
  2. For t∈[0,1]t \in [0, 1], let Ft=f+tgF_t = f + t g. It is holomorphic on WW, so it is meromorphic on WW with no poles.
  3. On CC, the reverse triangle inequality gives ∣Ft∣≥∣f∣−t∣g∣≥∣f∣−∣g∣\abs{F_t} \ge \abs{f} - t \abs{g} \ge \abs{f} - \abs{g}.
  4. The circle CC is compact by the Heine–Borel theorem. By attainment of bounds, ∣f∣−∣g∣\abs{f} - \abs{g} has a minimum mm on CC, and m>0m > 0 by hypothesis. So ∣Ft∣≥m\abs{F_t} \ge m on CC.
  5. Let Z(t)Z(t) be the number of zeros of FtF_t in ∣z−c∣<r\abs{z - c} < r, counted with order. By step 4 and the argument principle, Z(t)=12πi∮CFt′Ft dzZ(t) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \oint_C \frac{F_t'}{F_t} \, dz, a circle integral. In particular Z(t)Z(t) is an integer.
  6. For s,t∈[0,1]s, t \in [0, 1], a direct expansion gives (f′+tg′)(f+sg)−(f′+sg′)(f+tg)=(t−s)(g′f−f′g)(f' + t g')(f + s g) - (f' + s g')(f + t g) = (t - s)(g' f - f' g).
  7. Dividing by FtFsF_t F_s gives Ft′Ft−Fs′Fs=(t−s)(g′f−f′g)FtFs\frac{F_t'}{F_t} - \frac{F_s'}{F_s} = \frac{(t - s)(g' f - f' g)}{F_t F_s} on CC.
  8. By holomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable, f′f' and g′g' are holomorphic, hence continuous. So ∣g′f−f′g∣\abs{g' f - f' g} has a maximum K0K_0 on CC.
  9. By steps 4 and 7, ∣Ft′/Ft−Fs′/Fs∣≤∣t−s∣K0/m2\abs{F_t'/F_t - F_s'/F_s} \le \abs{t - s} K_0 / m^2 on CC. The length of CC is 2πr2\pi r.
  10. By the estimation lemma and step 5, ∣Z(t)−Z(s)∣≤12π⋅2πr⋅∣t−s∣K0m2=rK0m2∣t−s∣\abs{Z(t) - Z(s)} \le \frac{1}{2\pi} \cdot 2\pi r \cdot \frac{\abs{t - s} K_0}{m^2} = \frac{r K_0}{m^2} \abs{t - s}.
  11. Choose an integer q≥1q \ge 1 with q>rK0/m2q > r K_0 / m^2, and let tj=j/qt_j = j/q for j=0,…,qj = 0, \dots, q. By step 10, ∣Z(tj+1)−Z(tj)∣<1\abs{Z(t_{j+1}) - Z(t_j)} < 1.
  12. Since the values of ZZ are integers, Z(tj+1)=Z(tj)Z(t_{j+1}) = Z(t_j) for each jj. Hence Z(0)=Z(1)Z(0) = Z(1).
  13. Here F0=fF_0 = f and F1=f+gF_1 = f + g. So ff and f+gf + g have the same number of zeros in ∣z−c∣<r\abs{z - c} < r, counted with order.

Idea

Move continuously from ff to f+gf + g through f+tgf + t g. The condition ∣g∣<∣f∣\abs{g} < \abs{f} on the circle keeps every f+tgf + t g away from zero there. So the argument principle counts the zeros of each f+tgf + t g by an integral that depends continuously on tt. An integer that varies continuously cannot change.
