Proof of the existence of the infimum by negation
Builds on Completeness axiomInfimumSupremumSet bounded aboveThe reals form an ordered field
Proof
- Let be nonempty and bounded below. Let be a lower bound of .
- In the ordered field , implies . Indeed, add to both sides.
- Let . It is nonempty, because is nonempty.
- For each we have , so by step 2. Thus is an upper bound of .
- By the completeness axiom, has a supremum . Let .
- The number is a lower bound of . For , we have , so . By step 2, .
- Let be any lower bound of . As in step 4, is an upper bound of .
- Since is the least upper bound, . By step 2, .
- By steps 6 and 8, is a lower bound of that is larger than or equal to each lower bound. So is an infimum of .
Idea
Negation reverses the order, so it turns lower bounds into upper bounds. The supremum of the negated set exists by completeness, and its negative is the infimum.
