Proof of the chain rule for Jacobian matrices

Builds on Chain rule in several variablesJacobian matrixDerivative gives the directional derivativesPartial derivativeMatrix of a linear mapMatrix of a composition is the product of matrices

Proof

We show that a Jacobian matrix is the matrix of the derivative, and then we use that matrices multiply like compositions.

  1. Let p,q≥1p, q \ge 1, let V⊆ℝpV \subseteq \mathbb{R}^p be open, let σ ⁣:V→ℝq\sigma \colon V \to \mathbb{R}^q, and let c∈Vc \in V. Suppose that σ\sigma is differentiable at cc. Let e1,…,epe_1, \dots, e_p be the standard basis of ℝp\mathbb{R}^p.
  2. Since the derivative gives the directional derivatives, (σ(c+tej)−σ(c))/t→Dσ(c)(ej)\big(\sigma(c + t e_j) - \sigma(c)\big) / t \to D\sigma(c)(e_j) as t→0t \to 0, for each jj.
  3. For each v∈ℝqv \in \mathbb{R}^q, the entry viv_i satisfies ∣vi∣≤∥v∥|v_i| \le \|v\|. So the ii-th entries in step 2 converge as well: (σi(c+tej)−σi(c))/t→(Dσ(c)(ej))i\big(\sigma_i(c + t e_j) - \sigma_i(c)\big) / t \to \big(D\sigma(c)(e_j)\big)_i.
  4. By the definition of the partial derivative, step 3 says that ∂σi/∂xj(c)\partial \sigma_i / \partial x_j (c) exists and equals (Dσ(c)(ej))i\big(D\sigma(c)(e_j)\big)_i.
  5. So the Jacobian matrix Jσ(c)J_\sigma(c) is defined. Its column jj is the vector Dσ(c)(ej)D\sigma(c)(e_j). Thus Jσ(c)J_\sigma(c) is the matrix of Dσ(c)D\sigma(c) in the standard bases.
  6. Now let UU, WW, gg, ff and aa be as in the statement. By the chain rule in several variables, f∘gf \circ g is differentiable at aa, and D(f∘g)(a)=Df(g(a))∘Dg(a)D(f \circ g)(a) = Df(g(a)) \circ Dg(a).
  7. By step 5 applied to f∘gf \circ g at aa, to ff at g(a)g(a) and to gg at aa, the three Jacobian matrices are defined. They are the matrices of D(f∘g)(a)D(f \circ g)(a), Df(g(a))Df(g(a)) and Dg(a)Dg(a) in the standard bases.
  8. Since the matrix of a composition is the product of the matrices, step 6 gives Jf∘g(a)=Jf(g(a)) Jg(a)J_{f \circ g}(a) = J_f(g(a)) \, J_g(a).
  9. Here Jf(g(a))J_f(g(a)) is a k×mk \times m matrix and Jg(a)J_g(a) is an m×nm \times n matrix. Indeed ff maps W⊆ℝmW \subseteq \mathbb{R}^m into ℝk\mathbb{R}^k, and gg maps U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n into ℝm\mathbb{R}^m.

Idea

The Jacobian matrix of a differentiable map is the matrix of its derivative, because the partial derivatives are the values of the derivative on the basis vectors. The chain rule says that the derivative of a composition is a composition of linear maps. Matrices of linear maps multiply in the same order as the maps compose.
