Proof that the coordinate map is a linear isomorphism

Builds on BasisCoordinate vectorCoordinate spaceLinear mapLinear isomorphismBijective iff it has a two-sided inverse

Proof

We check linearity from the uniqueness of coordinates, and then exhibit a two-sided inverse.

  1. Let φ ⁣:V→Fn\varphi \colon V \to F^n be the map φ(v)=[v]B\varphi(v) = [v]_B. It is well defined, because each v∈Vv \in V equals a1b1+⋯+anbna_1 b_1 + \cdots + a_n b_n for exactly one (a1,…,an)∈Fn(a_1, \dots, a_n) \in F^n, since BB is a basis.
  2. φ\varphi is additive. Let [v]B=(a1,…,an)[v]_B = (a_1, \dots, a_n) and [w]B=(c1,…,cn)[w]_B = (c_1, \dots, c_n). Then v+w=∑i(ai+ci)biv + w = \sum_i (a_i + c_i) b_i.
  3. By uniqueness of coordinates, [v+w]B=(a1+c1,…,an+cn)=[v]B+[w]B[v + w]_B = (a_1 + c_1, \dots, a_n + c_n) = [v]_B + [w]_B.
  4. φ\varphi is homogeneous. For c∈Fc \in F, cv=∑i(cai)bicv = \sum_i (c a_i) b_i, so by uniqueness [cv]B=c [v]B[cv]_B = c\,[v]_B. Hence φ\varphi is a linear map.
  5. Let ψ ⁣:Fn→V\psi \colon F^n \to V be the map ψ(a1,…,an)=a1b1+⋯+anbn\psi(a_1, \dots, a_n) = a_1 b_1 + \cdots + a_n b_n on the coordinate space.
  6. For v∈Vv \in V with [v]B=(a1,…,an)[v]_B = (a_1, \dots, a_n), the definition of coordinates gives ψ(φ(v))=∑iaibi=v\psi(\varphi(v)) = \sum_i a_i b_i = v. So ψ∘φ=idV\psi \circ \varphi = \mathrm{id}_V.
  7. For (a1,…,an)∈Fn(a_1, \dots, a_n) \in F^n, let v=ψ(a1,…,an)=∑iaibiv = \psi(a_1, \dots, a_n) = \sum_i a_i b_i. By uniqueness of coordinates, [v]B=(a1,…,an)[v]_B = (a_1, \dots, a_n). So φ∘ψ=idFn\varphi \circ \psi = \mathrm{id}_{F^n}.
  8. By the two-sided inverse criterion, φ\varphi is bijective, and its inverse is ψ\psi.
  9. So φ\varphi is a bijective linear map, that is, a linear isomorphism. Its inverse sends (a1,…,an)(a_1, \dots, a_n) to a1b1+⋯+anbna_1 b_1 + \cdots + a_n b_n.

Idea

Coordinates exist because a basis spans, and they are unique because a basis is independent. Uniqueness makes the coordinate map linear. Rebuilding a vector from its coordinates is the inverse map.
