Statement

Let r>0r > 0, and let ff be a meromorphic function on an open set that contains the closed disc ∣z∣≤r\abs{z} \le r. Assume that f(0)≠0f(0) \ne 0, that 00 is not a pole of ff, and that ff has no zeros and no poles on the circle ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r. Let a1,…,ama_1, \dots, a_m be the zeros and b1,…,bnb_1, \dots, b_n the poles of ff in the disc ∣z∣<r\abs{z} < r, each repeated according to its multiplicity. Then log⁡∣f(0)∣=12π∫02πlog⁡∣f(reiθ)∣ dθ−∑j=1mlog⁡r∣aj∣+∑k=1nlog⁡r∣bk∣.\log \abs{f(0)} = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} \log \abs{f(r e^{i\theta})} \, d\theta - \sum_{j=1}^{m} \log \frac{r}{\abs{a_j}} + \sum_{k=1}^{n} \log \frac{r}{\abs{b_k}}.

Remarks

Divide ff by the Blaschke factors r(z−aj)/(r2−aj‾z)r(z - a_j)/(r^2 - \overline{a_j} z) and multiply by the analogous factors for the poles. The quotient gg has no zeros or poles on the closed disc, and ∣g∣=∣f∣\abs{g} = \abs{f} on the circle ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r. Then log⁡∣g∣\log \abs{g} is harmonic, and its mean value property gives the formula, since each factor has modulus ∣aj∣/r\abs{a_j}/r or ∣bk∣/r\abs{b_k}/r at 00. For example, take f(z)=z−af(z) = z - a with 0<∣a∣<10 < \abs{a} < 1 and r=1r = 1. The integral is 00, because ∣eiθ−a∣=∣1−a‾eiθ∣\abs{e^{i\theta} - a} = \abs{1 - \overline{a} e^{i\theta}} and log⁡∣1−a‾z∣\log \abs{1 - \overline{a} z} is harmonic on the closed unit disc with value 00 at 00; both sides then equal log⁡∣a∣\log \abs{a}. The formula remains true when ff has zeros or poles on the circle, since the integral still converges.

Going deeper

For a student

For a holomorphic ff, the formula gives ∑jlog⁡(r/∣aj∣)≤log⁡M(r)−log⁡∣f(0)∣\sum_j \log(r/\abs{a_j}) \le \log M(r) - \log \abs{f(0)}, where M(r)M(r) is the maximum of ∣f∣\abs{f} on ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r. This bounds the number of zeros in terms of the growth, which is the first step of the Hadamard factorization theorem. The sum can be written as ∫0rn(t)/t dt\int_0^r n(t)/t \, dt, where n(t)n(t) counts the zeros in ∣z∣≤t\abs{z} \le t. In this form the formula is the starting point of Nevanlinna theory and of its first main theorem.
