Statement

Let ff be an entire function that is not identically zero and has finite order ρ\rho. Let pp be the integer with p≤ρ<p+1p \le \rho < p + 1. Let m≥0m \ge 0 be the order of the zero of ff at 00. Let (an)(a_n) be the nonzero zeros of ff, repeated according to multiplicity. Let Ep(z)=(1−z)exp⁡(z+z2/2+⋯+zp/p)E_p(z) = (1 - z) \exp(z + z^2/2 + \cdots + z^p/p), with E0(z)=1−zE_0(z) = 1 - z. Then ∑n∣an∣−(p+1)<∞\sum_n \abs{a_n}^{-(p+1)} < \infty. Moreover, there is a polynomial gg of degree at most pp such that f(z)=zmeg(z)∏nEp ⁣(zan)f(z) = z^m e^{g(z)} \prod_{n} E_p\!\left(\frac{z}{a_n}\right) for all z∈ℂz \in \C, where the product converges uniformly on compact sets.

Remarks

The proof first bounds the number n(r)n(r) of zeros in the disc ∣z∣≤r\abs{z} \le r by Jensen's formula: n(r)=O(rρ+ε)n(r) = O(r^{\rho + \varepsilon}) for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0. This gives the convergence of ∑n∣an∣−(p+1)\sum_n \abs{a_n}^{-(p+1)}, so the Weierstrass product with the fixed index pp converges. The quotient of ff by zmz^m times the product is ege^{g} with gg entire. Lower bounds for the product away from its zeros show that gg is a polynomial of degree at most ρ\rho. For example, sin⁡(πz)\sin(\pi z) has order 11, so p=1p = 1 and sin⁡(πz)=πz∏n≠0(1−z/n)ez/n\sin(\pi z) = \pi z \prod_{n \ne 0} (1 - z/n) e^{z/n}. The finite order hypothesis is necessary: f(z)=eezf(z) = e^{e^z} has no zeros and infinite order, and f=egf = e^{g} with g(z)=ezg(z) = e^z, which is not a polynomial.

Going deeper

For a student

A useful consequence: an entire function of finite order that is not an integer has infinitely many zeros. Indeed, with finitely many zeros the factorization gives a polynomial times ege^{g} with gg a polynomial, whose order is an integer. Another consequence is that an entire function of finite order without zeros is ege^{g} with gg a polynomial. The theorem is a basic tool for the Riemann zeta function, through the product formula of the function ξ\xi, and for the Laguerre–Pólya class.
