Functions of a complex variable Entire and meromorphic functions Theorem
Weierstrass factorization theorem
Builds on Entire functionZero of a holomorphic functionWeierstrass productExponential function
Statement
For an integer , let be the elementary factor
- Let be a finite or infinite sequence of nonzero complex numbers with if it is infinite. Then there is an entire function whose zeros are exactly the points . The multiplicity of each zero is the number of times it occurs in the sequence.
- Let be an entire function that is not identically zero. Let be the order of the zero of at . Let be the nonzero zeros of , repeated according to multiplicity. Then there are an entire function and integers such that where the product converges uniformly on compact subsets of .
Remarks
The key estimate is for . Choose the so that for every , for example . Then the Weierstrass product converges and has the prescribed zeros. For part 2, the quotient of by times this product is entire and has no zeros. So it is for an entire , because is simply connected. A classical example is Euler's sine product . The convergence factors are needed: for the product diverges, while converges.
Going deeper
For a student
Part 1 shows that any sequence tending to infinity is the zero set of some entire function. As a consequence, every meromorphic function on is a quotient of two entire functions: multiply it by an entire function with zeros at its poles. The theorem leaves and the very free. For functions of finite order the Hadamard factorization theorem makes both choices precise. The companion result for poles and principal parts is Mittag-Leffler's theorem.
