Functions of a complex variable Complex integration Theorem
Hadamard three-lines theorem
Builds on Holomorphic functionMaximum modulus principleSupremum
Statement
Let be the closed vertical strip. Let be continuous and bounded on and holomorphic on the interior of . For let . Then for each with ,
Remarks
Proof idea: assume and put , so that on both boundary lines. For the function tends to as in , since is bounded. The maximum modulus principle on long rectangles gives , and gives . The boundedness hypothesis is needed. The function satisfies . It has modulus on both lines but is unbounded on the line . This theorem is the key step in the Riesz–Thorin interpolation theorem.

For a student
The theorem is the strip form of the Hadamard three-circle theorem and a special case of the Phragmén–Lindelöf principle. Its main use is in interpolation: the Riesz–Thorin theorem bounds an operator on for intermediate by applying it to an analytic family of functions. The same idea appears in complex interpolation of Banach spaces and in convexity bounds for the Riemann zeta function in the critical strip.
