Functions of a complex variable Complex integration Theorem
Phragmén–Lindelöf principle
Statement
Let and let be the open sector of opening . Let be continuous on the closure and holomorphic on . Assume that for each on the boundary of . Assume also that there are constants and with for all . Then for all .
Remarks
Proof idea: pick with and put for . On one has with a positive cosine, so at infinity. The maximum modulus principle on bounded pieces of gives , and gives the claim. The growth condition cannot be relaxed to . The function has modulus at , which is on the boundary rays and unbounded on the positive axis. There are similar statements for strips, half-planes and other unbounded domains; the Hadamard three-lines theorem is one of them.

For a student
The principle is used throughout the theory of entire functions and in analytic number theory. It gives convexity bounds for -functions in vertical strips, and it underlies results such as Lindelöf's theorem and Carlson's theorem.
