Functions of a complex variable Complex integration Theorem
Lindelöf's theorem
Builds on Holomorphic functionMaximum modulus principlePhragmén–Lindelöf principle
Statement
Let and be real numbers, and let be a closed half-strip. Let be continuous on and holomorphic on its interior. Assume that for each on the boundary of . Assume also that there are constants with for all . Then for all .
Remarks
Proof idea: for let , so that . Then on , and as because grows at most polynomially. The maximum modulus principle on the rectangles with large gives , and gives . A growth hypothesis is needed. On the half-strip , , the function has modulus . It is bounded on the boundary, where or , but unbounded on the line . The theorem is a case of the Phragmén–Lindelöf principle.

For a student
The theorem is used in analytic number theory for functions such as the Riemann zeta function on vertical half-strips. Together with the Hadamard three-lines theorem it gives the convexity bounds for the growth of as . In the proof, the factor is the standard device to force decay at infinity before applying the maximum modulus principle.
