Proof that the gradient is orthogonal to level sets
Builds on Chain rule for a composition with a curveGradientLevel set
Proof
We differentiate the constant function in two ways.
- Let , , , , and be as in the statement. Put .
- Since lies in the level set , for each .
- So for with , the difference quotient is . Hence .
- By the chain rule for a composition with a curve with , .
- Since is differentiable at , the gradient is defined, and for each .
- By steps 3, 4 and 5, .
Idea
Along a curve inside a level set, the value of does not change, so its rate of change is . The chain rule computes that rate as the dot product of the gradient with the velocity of the curve. So this dot product is .
