Real functions Proof

Proof that Lipschitz maps are uniformly continuous

Builds on Metric spaceLipschitz mapEpsilon-delta uniform continuity

Proof

We give an explicit δ\delta for each ε\varepsilon.

  1. Let (X,dX)(X, d_X) and (Y,dY)(Y, d_Y) be metric spaces. Let f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y be Lipschitz with a constant K≥0K \ge 0.
  2. So dY(f(x),f(y))≤K dX(x,y)d_Y(f(x), f(y)) \le K \, d_X(x, y) for all x,y∈Xx, y \in X.
  3. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0 be real, and put δ=ε/(K+1)\delta = \varepsilon / (K + 1). Then δ>0\delta > 0, because K+1≥1K + 1 \ge 1.
  4. Let x,y∈Xx, y \in X with dX(x,y)<δd_X(x, y) < \delta.
  5. By step 2 and K≥0K \ge 0, we get dY(f(x),f(y))≤K dX(x,y)≤Kδ=εK/(K+1)d_Y(f(x), f(y)) \le K \, d_X(x, y) \le K \delta = \varepsilon K / (K + 1).
  6. Since K/(K+1)<1K / (K + 1) < 1 and ε>0\varepsilon > 0, we get εK/(K+1)<ε\varepsilon K / (K + 1) < \varepsilon. So dY(f(x),f(y))<εd_Y(f(x), f(y)) < \varepsilon.
  7. The number δ\delta depends only on ε\varepsilon and KK, not on xx or yy.
  8. So condition 1 of uniform continuity holds, and ff is uniformly continuous.

Idea

The Lipschitz inequality turns a bound on the input distance into a bound on the output distance, with the same factor everywhere. Dividing ε\varepsilon by K+1K + 1 instead of KK avoids a special case when K=0K = 0.
