Definition
Let be an interval and let be a curve of class parametrised by arc length , with curvature for all . Its unit tangent is , its unit normal is , and its binormal is , where is the cross product. The vector is a multiple of . The torsion of at is the number with
Remarks
For a regular curve with any parameter and , the torsion is Example: take the helix with and . Then and , so . Non-example: on the curve the curvature vanishes at , so and are not defined there and the torsion is not defined at that point. Some books use the opposite sign convention . A curve with lies in a plane if and only if everywhere.
