Builds on LaplacianDirichlet boundary conditionSemilinear PDE

Problem

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded domain with smooth boundary, and let λ>0\lambda > 0 be a parameter. Find all functions u∈C2(Ω)∩C(Ω‾)u \in C^2(\Omega) \cap C(\overline{\Omega}) such that −Δu=λeu in Ω,u=0 on ∂Ω,-\Delta u = \lambda e^{u} \text{ in } \Omega, \qquad u = 0 \text{ on } \partial \Omega, where Δ\Delta is the Laplacian. In particular, determine for which λ\lambda solutions exist and how many there are.

Remarks

This is a semilinear elliptic problem with a Dirichlet boundary condition; the exponential nonlinearity makes it a standard test case for bifurcation theory and numerical continuation. By the maximum principle every solution is positive in Ω\Omega. There is a number λ∗∈(0,∞)\lambda^* \in (0, \infty), depending on Ω\Omega, such that a minimal solution exists for 0<λ<λ∗0 < \lambda < \lambda^* and no solution exists for λ>λ∗\lambda > \lambda^*. For n=1n = 1 and Ω=(0,1)\Omega = (0, 1) the solutions are u(x)=−2ln⁡(cosh⁡(ϑ(x−12)/2)/cosh⁡(ϑ/4))u(x) = -2 \ln\big(\cosh(\vartheta (x - \tfrac12)/2) / \cosh(\vartheta/4)\big), where ϑ>0\vartheta > 0 solves ϑ=2λcosh⁡(ϑ/4)\vartheta = \sqrt{2 \lambda} \cosh(\vartheta/4). This equation has two roots for λ<λ∗\lambda < \lambda^*, one for λ=λ∗\lambda = \lambda^* and none for λ>λ∗\lambda > \lambda^*, with λ∗≈3.5138\lambda^* \approx 3.5138. On the unit ball of ℝn\R^n with n≥3n \ge 3, the function u=−2ln⁡∣x∣u = -2 \ln \abs{x} is a singular solution with λ=2(n−2)\lambda = 2(n-2). Joseph and Lundgren (1973) showed that on the unit ball with 3≤n≤93 \le n \le 9 there are infinitely many solutions for λ=2(n−2)\lambda = 2(n - 2). In thermal explosion theory, the problem gives the steady states of the Frank-Kamenetskii model. In 1853 Liouville found the general solution of Δu+λeu=0\Delta u + \lambda e^{u} = 0 in the plane, without boundary condition; this is a form of Liouville's equation.
