Proof that the reals form an ordered field, with the Cauchy sequence construction

Proof

We use the construction from Cauchy sequences and the order on the reals defined there.

  1. A real number is a class x=[(xn)]x = [(x_n)] of Cauchy sequences of rational numbers. Two sequences give the same real number exactly when their difference tends to 00.
  2. The number 00 is the class of the constant sequence 00. Since (xn)+(−xn)(x_n) + (-x_n) is the constant sequence 00, we get −x=[(−xn)]-x = [(-x_n)]. So y−x=[(yn−xn)]y - x = [(y_n - x_n)].
  3. By definition, x<yx < y means: there are a rational ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and an NN with yn−xn>εy_n - x_n > \varepsilon for all n≥Nn \ge N.
  4. This does not depend on the representatives. Let (xn′)(x'_n) and (yn′)(y'_n) be equivalent to (xn)(x_n) and (yn)(y_n). Choose N′≥NN' \ge N with ∣xn′−xn∣<ε/4\abs{x'_n - x_n} < \varepsilon/4 and ∣yn′−yn∣<ε/4\abs{y'_n - y_n} < \varepsilon/4 for n≥N′n \ge N'.
  5. Then yn′−xn′>(yn−xn)−ε/2>ε/2y'_n - x'_n > (y_n - x_n) - \varepsilon/2 > \varepsilon/2 for n≥N′n \ge N'. All computations here take place in the ordered field of rationals.
  6. Lemma. Let (zn)(z_n) be a Cauchy sequence of rationals that does not tend to 00. Then there are a rational r>0r > 0 and a PP with zn>rz_n > r for all n≥Pn \ge P, or zn<−rz_n < -r for all n≥Pn \ge P.
  7. Proof of the lemma. Since (zn)(z_n) does not tend to 00, there is a rational s>0s > 0 such that for each NN some n≥Nn \ge N has ∣zn∣≥s\abs{z_n} \ge s.
  8. Since (zn)(z_n) is Cauchy, there is NN with ∣zm−zn∣<s/3\abs{z_m - z_n} < s/3 for all m,n≥Nm, n \ge N. Pick P≥NP \ge N with ∣zP∣≥s\abs{z_P} \ge s.
  9. If zP≥sz_P \ge s, then zn>zP−s/3≥2s/3z_n > z_P - s/3 \ge 2s/3 for each n≥Pn \ge P. If zP≤−sz_P \le -s, then zn<zP+s/3≤−2s/3z_n < z_P + s/3 \le -2s/3 for each n≥Pn \ge P. Take r=2s/3r = 2s/3.
  10. Let x≠yx \ne y be real numbers. Then (yn−xn)(y_n - x_n) does not tend to 00, by step 1. By the lemma, yn−xn>ry_n - x_n > r eventually or xn−yn>rx_n - y_n > r eventually. So x<yx < y or y<xy < x.
  11. The relations x<yx < y and y<xy < x do not both hold. Otherwise, for all large nn, yn−xn>εy_n - x_n > \varepsilon and xn−yn>ε′x_n - y_n > \varepsilon' with ε,ε′>0\varepsilon, \varepsilon' > 0. Adding gives 0>ε+ε′0 > \varepsilon + \varepsilon', which is false.
  12. The relation x<xx < x never holds. By step 4 we may use the same representative twice, and then xn−xn=0x_n - x_n = 0 is never larger than ε>0\varepsilon > 0.
  13. Recall that x≤yx \le y means x<yx < y or x=yx = y. It is reflexive. It is antisymmetric: if x≤yx \le y, y≤xy \le x and x≠yx \ne y, then x<yx < y and y<xy < x, against step 11.
  14. It is transitive. Let x≤y≤zx \le y \le z. If one of the two relations is an equality, then x≤zx \le z at once. Otherwise zn−yn>εz_n - y_n > \varepsilon and yn−xn>ε′y_n - x_n > \varepsilon' for large nn. Then zn−xn>ε+ε′z_n - x_n > \varepsilon + \varepsilon', so x<zx < z.
  15. It is total by step 10. So ≤\le is a total order on ℝ\R.
  16. Let a≤ba \le b and let cc be real. If a=ba = b, then a+c=b+ca + c = b + c. If a<ba < b, then a+ca + c and b+cb + c have the representatives (an+cn)(a_n + c_n) and (bn+cn)(b_n + c_n). Their difference is bn−anb_n - a_n, which is eventually larger than some ε>0\varepsilon > 0. So a+c<b+ca + c < b + c.
  17. Let 0≤a0 \le a and 0≤b0 \le b. If a=0a = 0 or b=0b = 0, then ab=0a b = 0 in the field of reals, so 0≤ab0 \le a b.
  18. Otherwise 0<a0 < a and 0<b0 < b. By steps 2 and 3, there are rationals ε,ε′>0\varepsilon, \varepsilon' > 0 and an NN with an>εa_n > \varepsilon and bn>ε′b_n > \varepsilon' for n≥Nn \ge N.
  19. The product aba b is represented by (anbn)(a_n b_n), and anbn>εε′>0a_n b_n > \varepsilon \varepsilon' > 0 for n≥Nn \ge N. So 0<ab0 < a b.
  20. The reals form a field, by the field property of the reals. With steps 15, 16, 17 and 19, ℝ\R is an ordered field.

Idea

A real number that is not zero is represented by a sequence that eventually stays on one side of zero, at a fixed distance. This gives the trichotomy, so the order is total. The two axioms of an ordered field then hold term by term, because they hold in ℚ\Q.
