Functions of a complex variable Proof

Proof that power series converge uniformly on smaller intervals inside the radius of convergence

Builds on Power seriesRadius of convergenceSupremumGeometric seriesWeierstrass M-test

Proof

We dominate the terms by a convergent geometric series and apply the Weierstrass M-test.

  1. Let ∑an(x−c)n\sum a_n (x - c)^n be a power series with radius of convergence R>0R > 0. Let A={t≥0:(∣an∣tn) is bounded}A = \set{ t \ge 0 : (|a_n| t^n) \text{ is bounded} }, so that R=sup⁡AR = \sup A.
  2. Let 0<r<R0 < r < R. Choose a real number ss with r<s<Rr < s < R. For example, take s=r+R2s = \frac{r + R}{2} if R<∞R < \infty, and s=r+1s = r + 1 if R=∞R = \infty.
  3. Since s<R=sup⁡As < R = \sup A, the number ss is not an upper bound of AA, by the definition of the supremum. So there is t∈At \in A with t>st > s.
  4. Since t∈At \in A, there is C≥0C \ge 0 with ∣an∣tn≤C|a_n| t^n \le C for all nn. Since 0<s<t0 < s < t, also ∣an∣sn≤∣an∣tn≤C|a_n| s^n \le |a_n| t^n \le C for all nn.
  5. Let q=rsq = \frac{r}{s}. Then 0<q<10 < q < 1.
  6. Let x∈[c−r,c+r]x \in [c - r, c + r]. Then ∣x−c∣≤r|x - c| \le r, so by step 4, ∣an(x−c)n∣≤∣an∣rn=∣an∣snqn≤Cqn.|a_n (x - c)^n| \le |a_n| r^n = |a_n| s^n q^n \le C q^n.
  7. Let Mn=CqnM_n = C q^n. Since ∣q∣<1|q| < 1, the geometric series ∑n=0∞Mn\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} M_n converges.
  8. By steps 6 and 7, the Weierstrass M-test applies to the functions x↦an(x−c)nx \mapsto a_n (x - c)^n on [c−r,c+r][c - r, c + r].
  9. So the power series converges absolutely and uniformly on [c−r,c+r][c - r, c + r].

Idea

Slightly beyond rr, at some s<Rs < R, the terms ∣an∣sn|a_n| s^n stay bounded. On [c−r,c+r][c - r, c + r], each term is then at most a constant times (r/s)n(r/s)^n. These bounds form a convergent geometric series that does not depend on xx, so the M-test gives uniform convergence.
