Proof that the exponential function is positive
Builds on Exponential functionExponential of a sum
Proof
We show that is a square and is not zero.
- Let be the exponential function. At , every term with is , and the term with is . So .
- Let be real. By the exponential of a sum, . A square of a real number is nonnegative, so .
- By the exponential of a sum and step 1, .
- If , the left side of step 3 would be , not . So .
- By steps 2 and 4, for every real .
Idea
The functional equation writes as the square of , so it is never negative. It also gives , so it is never zero.
