Hill differential equation

Example

Let T>0T > 0 and let f:ℝ→ℝf : \R \to \R be continuous and TT-periodic. Hill's equation is the second-order linear differential equation y′′+f(t) y=0.y'' + f(t)\, y = 0. The Mathieu equation y′′+(a−2qcos⁡2t) y=0y'' + (a - 2q \cos 2t)\, y = 0, with real constants aa and qq, is the special case f(t)=a−2qcos⁡2tf(t) = a - 2q\cos 2t, of period π\pi.

Floquet analysis: let y1,y2y_1, y_2 be the solutions with y1(0)=1y_1(0) = 1, y1′(0)=0y_1'(0) = 0 and y2(0)=0y_2(0) = 0, y2′(0)=1y_2'(0) = 1. The monodromy matrix of the equivalent system for (y,y′)(y, y') is MM with columns (y1(T),y1′(T))(y_1(T), y_1'(T)) and (y2(T),y2′(T))(y_2(T), y_2'(T)). The system matrix has trace 00, so by Liouville's formula det⁡M=1\det M = 1. Hence the multipliers are the roots of μ2−Δμ+1=0\mu^2 - \Delta \mu + 1 = 0, where Δ=y1(T)+y2′(T)\Delta = y_1(T) + y_2'(T) is the discriminant.

  1. If ∣Δ∣<2\abs{\Delta} < 2, the multipliers are two distinct conjugate numbers of modulus 11, and all solutions are bounded.
  2. If ∣Δ∣>2\abs{\Delta} > 2, there is a real multiplier of modulus greater than 11, and some solution is unbounded.

Check with constant f=ω2f = \omega^2, ω>0\omega > 0, viewed as TT-periodic: y1=cos⁡ωty_1 = \cos \omega t and y2=sin⁡(ωt)/ωy_2 = \sin(\omega t)/\omega, so Δ=2cos⁡ωT\Delta = 2\cos \omega T and ∣Δ∣≤2\abs{\Delta} \le 2, matching the bounded oscillations of the harmonic oscillator.
