Ordinary differential equations Proof

Proof of the general solution of an inhomogeneous linear equation

Builds on Linear differential equation of order nHomogeneous linear equationFundamental system of solutionsSuperposition principleLinearity of differentiation

Proof

  1. Let u,v:I→ℝu, v : I \to \R be nn times differentiable and α,β∈ℝ\alpha, \beta \in \R. By linearity of differentiation, applied kk times, (αu+βv)(k)=αu(k)+βv(k)(\alpha u + \beta v)^{(k)} = \alpha u^{(k)} + \beta v^{(k)} for k≤nk \le n.
  2. Multiplying by aka_k and adding over kk gives L(αu+βv)=αLu+βLvL(\alpha u + \beta v) = \alpha L u + \beta L v on II. This is the computation of the superposition principle.
  3. Let SS be the set of solutions of the homogeneous equation Ly=0L y = 0 on II. Since (y1,…,yn)(y_1, \dots, y_n) is a fundamental system, it is a basis of SS.
  4. Assume yy is a solution of the linear equation Ly=bL y = b on II. Then y−ypy - y_p is nn times differentiable, and L(y−yp)=Ly−Lyp=b−b=0L(y - y_p) = L y - L y_p = b - b = 0 by step 2.
  5. So y−yp∈Sy - y_p \in S. By step 3, y−yp=c1y1+⋯+cnyny - y_p = c_1 y_1 + \dots + c_n y_n for some real numbers c1,…,cnc_1, \dots, c_n. This gives the stated form of yy.
  6. Conversely, let y=yp+c1y1+⋯+cnyny = y_p + c_1 y_1 + \dots + c_n y_n with c1,…,cn∈ℝc_1, \dots, c_n \in \R. Then yy is nn times differentiable, as a combination of such functions.
  7. By step 2, Ly=Lyp+c1Ly1+⋯+cnLyn=b+0+⋯+0=bL y = L y_p + c_1 L y_1 + \dots + c_n L y_n = b + 0 + \dots + 0 = b on II. So yy solves Ly=bL y = b on II.

Idea

The operator LL is linear. So two solutions of Ly=bL y = b differ by a solution of Ly=0L y = 0. The fundamental system describes all solutions of Ly=0L y = 0, and adding ypy_p describes all solutions of Ly=bL y = b.
